Seizing the Opportunity, E.K.

Everything happens for a reason. Nothing is coincidental. As a believer in the Lord, I believe that God allows things to happen to us to keep us on the narrow path that will lead to glory. Because of our unfaithfulness, God comes into our environments again and again to remind us to turn back to Him.

During my sophomore year in college, my grandfather found out that he had cancer. Upon hearing the news, I had the feeling that I should write something about the Lord to Him. Week after week, I would remind myself that I needed to write the letter, but because of my passivity, I never actually sat down to write the letter. A few weeks later, my mom called and told me that my grandfather had passed away. My immediate reaction was not an outburst of crying, but a deep and intense feeling that I had forever lost the opportunity to tell my grandfather about the Lord. As I prayed to repent for my unfaithfulness, I had the deep sense that the Lord has a timing for everything. Because God is merciful, many times He will keep calling us to give us many chances to obey His will. But perhaps, once in our lifetime, He will give us only one chance to gain and know Him in a very particular situation. If we are not willing to cooperate with Him, then the chance will be lost forever. After this experience, I told the Lord that whatever He reveals to me concerning His heart, I will follow. Never again will I miss Him. All I want is to seize the opportunity to gain the Lord, follow Him and see His smiling face. I want to see Him in that day and hear Him say to me, “Well done, good and faithful slave” (Matthew 25:23).
